About Bruce Steinhoff
Born August 1957 in Simcoe, Ontario
Currently resides in Port Dover, Ontario

Bruce began showing an aptitude for art when he was seven, drawing portraits of his friends. When he was in grade 3, his teacher asked them to draw a picture of what they wanted to be when they grew up. He fondly recalls drawing himself holding a pallet filled with a multitude of different colour paints and a paint brush in hand. Along with art, Bruce excelled at athletic endeavours, such as tennis, gymnastics and running. Bruce also stood out in the classroom - skipping grade 4 and finishing at the top of his classes throughout his school years. His passion for art always remained and was fueled further following his first camping trip with his dad to northern Ontario. He fell in love with the north; along with its beautiful landscape and thus it became his dominant subject matter. Despite multiple obstacles, criticism and resistance - Bruce persevered; never once giving up on his craft. In 1976, at the age of 19 - Bruce made landscape art his primary focus and began painting seriously. Although mainly self-taught, he also studied under Carl Schaefer at the Schneider School of fine Arts, Actinolite. Today he is a recognized professional, whose brilliant colours and vivid northern Ontario landscapes are hanging in some of the most prestigious galleries in Canada; as well as photographed in the magazines, Chatelaine and Canadian Country Home.
Yearly he made several trips to the Pointe-Au-Baril, Georgian Bay, Lake Huron and Moon Bay areas, often painting on site and also taking photographs back to his studio to paint from. He has an adventurous spirit with a passion for travel and loved exploring the world. He travelled to 31 countries and immersed himself in the various cultures, with his favourite mode of transportation being his bicycle. Notably, in 1999 he cycled from Lisbon to Nice, via the north coast of Spain and south of France, and in 2000, he completed a five month/8,000 km trip from Norway to Istanbul.

“One of Canada’s foremost contemporary landscape painters…Bruce’s paintings honour tradition but have branched out into his own distinctive style. His work has a great amount of depth and complexity, and I have much admiration for it”

“ An artist in the great and wonderful tradition of Canadian landscape paintings, but an artist whose vision is still fresh and innovative…if Bruce had been born two generations ago, it surely would have been called “The Group of Eight”
